The current educational environment has witnessed a phenomenal growth in distance learning. The jitters that were experienced by many people during the initial phases of this educational training practice seem to have faded and with the world demanding more and more skills even from the working class. This comes at the backdrop of many advances in the computer and internet technology which have interconnected the world into one big village. However, there are more latent reasons why distance learning is taking root even in the most unlikely areas. At this point, it is important tool to note that distance learning is not all about the formal education but recently, it has become a part of knowledge management systems where companies try to disseminate specialized information to all employees wherever they might be based. So, why is there this sudden interest in distance learning?

The first reason has to do with future planning. Many people get hired at a young age when they haven’t joined college and at times, their dreams of joining college are forgotten as they get immersed in their jobs. In many cases, the fear of losing the earnings makes college a poorer option. However, the contemporary want certified skills and thus, many of these employees have had to look for convenient choices for training and distance learning happens to be the best option. In this case, they seek to invest in their future and the impetus is given by the sudden changes in the economy where unskilled laborers are always the fist to be laid off when the economy fares badly.

Distance learning is also considered a preferable option to the traditional classroom situation. In most colleges, classes hold hundreds and interaction with the tutors might be impossible. However, in the virtual classes, there is a possibility of meeting the lecturers and even speeding up your courses as you get more information from them.

Another key motivation regards the new developments in knowledge management systems. With the corporations struggling to keep up with developing technologies, the employees are given the tools to search and apply the new ideas from the information systems that are provided. In most cases, only people who are certified have access to these systems and on the other hand, most of the developing technologies and ideas need some basic training. This makes it necessary for the employee to seek a way of working at the same level with all the other colleagues and in so doing, gain access to the new ideas which will definitely improve his/her performance and productivity. Distance learning helps the disadvantaged employee catch up and operate at the same level with others.

Distance learning growth is also attributed to the need by people to change their professions. If one had trained as a nurse and they realize teaching is their calling, this would mean starting over in college but with Distance learning, this becomes easy as one can train part time and earn their degree or any other qualifications. This is even made more possible by the fact that internet usage is at its highest and with the virtual classes being based on the net, it only makes sense that their popularity has grown tremendously.
