Mobile phone recycling paid off for Hartford Motorcycle Club in Derbyshire in no uncertain terms. The Midlands bikers saw the potential for raising vital funds for a disabled member of their club. Geoff, who was injured in a motor cycling accident over five years ago, has continued to be a member of the club despite his injuries preventing him from riding his motorbike.
‘I still loved the social side of things’ he says ‘the guys in the club have been great. But it was a bit isolating to not be able to go out on rides, and I did feel a bit foolish being a biker who couldn’t ride’. Geoff needed an expensive conversion to be made to his much loved Ducati if he was going to take to the road once more, and being on a small wage this seemed impossible. But fellow members of the Hartford Motorcycle Club rallied round and were determined to raise the money needed to get Geoff back on his bike.
Club secretary Steve says that he was astonished by the role mobile phone recycling played in raising the money needed. ‘We started organising raffles and open days for the public where they could come and see our vintage bike collection in order to get the cash together’ he says. ‘Then one evening after work I saw an advert on TV about how you could sell your mobile for cash. I wondered how many old mobiles we could get together and sell if all the club members got together and asked around their friends, family and colleagues. The result was incredible, phones seemed to be appearing from everywhere after about a week of asking. At one point there were so many phones being dropped off at my house I was running out of places to put them’.
Now the phones have been traded in and the money has been added to that gathered through other fundraising activities. ‘My Ducati is in the shop being adjusted’ Geoff smiles ‘I’ll have it back in a week. And it will be my life I’ll be getting back as well as my bike. It’s marvellous, and all made possible just because of Steve seeing an advert saying that you could sell your mobile’.
