A person by the name Hugh J. ward is a person who is common in the bingo industry. He was able to standardize the modern bingo in and around the states of Western Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh sometime in the early 1920’s. The man went ahead and copyrighted Bingo and authored the bingo rule book in 1933.
Bingo further gained popularity when in a traveling carnival in Atlanta in 1929. A toy merchandiser by the name Edwin Lowe noted the engagement of players to the beano game, which used ward’s rules and dried beans, cardboard sheets and a rubber band. Lowe took this idea to New York, showed it to his friends conducting bingo games similar to the one he witnessed.
One theory for the origin of the term bingo is that, one day a beano player won the game, was so excited and instead of shouting beano, the player ended up shouting bingo. However, the name bingo usage started back in 1770’s in Great Britain, and migrated to Pittsburgh region a generation before Lowe introduced the game.
Lowe introduced two versions of the bingo games that are up to this day played in entertainment joints and casinos. The first version had 12 cards while the other version had 24 cards.
