Are Compatible Ink Cartridges Worth the Bother?

You click dozens of pictures of your family vacation but feel let down when you see the faded photos. You blame the studio for using cheap printer ink to save money. But with cost cutting becoming the order of the day, many are being forced to switch to compatible ink cartridges or scouring for discount inks and toners for printers.

So are compatible ink cartridges incomparable to the quality and clarity that originals offer? It is true that the quality of the final product using a specific manufacturer’s original ink cartridges is best when its own brand of paper is used for printing. But it is also a fact that compatible ink cartridges or refilled ones are cheaper than the originals. The obvious question then is: what is the difference between refilled/ remanufactured and compatible ink cartridges?

For the general public and small office setup using compatible ink cartridges and compatible ink is quite satisfactory when a standard high resolution picture is printed on 125GSM photo gloss paper. While the originals may be marginally superior, looking at the price/output ratio, compatible cartridges and cheap printer inks do a reasonable job. There have been complaints about compatible cartridges blocking printer heads and streaking the ink, but this problem can be easily rectified.

Some manufacturers such as Epsom, Brothers and Canon use a printer technology wherein the printer has a built-in print head. This contains ink tanks for different colored inks. When any one ink runs out, all that needs to be done is replace the specific color tank. On the other hand, printers made by HP, Dell, Olivetti and Philips are designed such that the print head is integrated into the cartridge. Replacing the finished ink cartridge therefore implies changing the cartridge and entire print head as well.

Original cartridges are quite expensive because of their intrinsic quality and complicated technology used. Therefore, original cartridges can and should definitely be recycled and reused. Such compatible ink cartridges are thoroughly cleaned and checked for signs of degradation before being refilled.

This process is undertaken by third party manufacturers, not the original companies, and the cartridge is filled with printer ink cheap in comparison to the original ink but it is, nonetheless, compatible ink. It is not uncommon for cheap printer ink filled in a recycled Canon or Epsom being used for remanufactured HP or Dell cartridges.

Cartridge recycling is particularly important for two reasons. Firstly, it is kinder on the environment given the huge quantities of degradable and non-degradable waste generated every year. Secondly, the quality of integrated print heads of manufacturers like HP, Dell and Lexmark is so excellent that according to some estimates it would take thousands of years for them to decay. On the other hand, Canon, Brother and Epsom cartridges are ink tanks meant to be discarded after they finish.

Compatible ink cartridges are definitely worth the bother because they provide good quality printing that is economical, a big consideration for casual home users and smaller office setups.
