TVs are one area of home entertainment that have advanced considerably in the past few years, especially since the introduction of LCD technology. The televisions themselves have got smaller and lighter, not to mention better quality, and you can choose between full HD, HD ready, and even 3D when you buy a new set. This range of choice is great news for the tech savvy consumer, but can be baffling to most.

When buying an LCD TV one of the first numbers you\'ll be presented with, after the screen size, is the resolution. Typically, you will be looking at 720 or 1080, sometimes referred to as HD ready or full HD respectively. Generally speaking, the full HD 1080 offers the best quality screen resolution and this means that pictures will be sharper and clearer. Blu Ray offers 1080 resolution so if you want to make the most of your new Blu Ray player then you should opt for full HD sets.

Immediately following the resolution, you will also see a letter; modern TVs usually include a p but it is possible to see an i in some older and cheaper models. I stands for interlaced while p stands for progressive scan. Interlaced Video has alternate sets of LCDs and each of the two sets updates with each refresh. The better quality Progress Scan technology means that all of the lines are updated every time.

One figure that is often overlooked but has a massive influence of the quality of your TV viewing is the refresh rate of the model you choose. 60Hz is considered a very good refresh rate for an LCD TV but if you\'re considering 3D TV then you need to look high than this to 100Hz or above.

3D TV remains an emerging technology but it is coming on in leaps and bounds. Passive technology 3D is lower quality 3D but works out cheaper especially as the glasses cost just a couple of pounds a pair. However, for the best quality 3D viewing you will need to pay around £50 a pair of glasses and buy a TV that supports active 3D technology.

These are just some of the options that await you when shopping for LCD TVs. Visit the guide to LCD and 3D TVs to find out more and make sure you get the best TV for your requirements.
